MCALLEN, Texas – The Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships (VAMOS) is partnering with Doctors Hospital at Renaissance for its upcoming 24th annual golf club tournament. The tournament will help raise scholarship funds for students in the Rio Grande Valley.
Since its founding, VAMOS has awarded more than $20 million to 853 students and is prepared to award another million dollars to 2020 graduates. The organization’s executive director tells us how these funds help make a difference in the lives of students.
Daisy Martinez, “A lot of the times the students are either upset or distraught because they want to go to the university of their dreams but they’re unable to because their family simply can’t afford it. If we can help them in any way by providing them with $8,000 or $20,000 for them to go and reach their full potential, then that’s what we’re here for.”
Martinez adding the money awarded each year is a small investment compared to the return the Rio Grande Valley receives from VAMOS alumni.
