2019 holiday return policies for some of your favorite stores

Yikes! Didn’t get what you asked for Christmas? Some after-Christmas shoppers are already planning to return or exchange gifts this holiday season. 

Stores used to give us months, even a year to return holiday gifts. But that ship has sailed! 

Below are some return policies for some retail stores for those who might be left with an unwanted gift. 

Walmart 

According to its website, gifts bought between October 24 and December 25, 2019, will have an extended return timeframe allowing more time to return unwanted items. If an item has a 14-day or 30-day return window, Walmart has extended the return window to start on December 26, 2019. Items under the 90-day return window will have no change. This excludes marketplace items.  If an item has a 14 or 30-day return window, Walmart has extended the return window to start on December 26, 2019. Items under the 90-day return window will have no change. 

Target 

The retailer has a 90-day return policy. According to its website, Target has a full refund policy for unopened items. Items that are opened or damaged or do not have a receipt may be denied a refund or exchange. 

Some items sold by Target have a modified return policy noted on the receipt, packing slip.

Amazon.com  

There is nothing like online shopping. Amazon is popular with last-mile delivery options and same-day delivery. 

Amazon announced that the items shipped between November 1 and December 31 of this year, can be returned until January 31 of the following year for a full refund. 

According to its website, it can take up to 25 days for an item to reach the company once returned.

Macy’s

According to its website, the department store accepts most returns by mail and in stores within 90 days of purchase for free. Jewelry, watches, small electrics, social dresses, and backstage merchandise purchased between November 1, 2019-December 31, 2019 can be returned until January 31, 2020. Tech accessories and Apple products purchased between December 1, 2019-December 31, 2019 can be returned until January 8, 2020.  The return policy for Last Act merchandise will not be extended. 

Home Depot 

Most new, unopened merchandise sold by The Home Depot can be returned within 90 days of purchase unless it is noted in the home improvement store’s “Return Policy Exceptions.” 

If you’re missing your receipt, the store may be able to locate it in their system. Receipts for purchases made with a credit or debit card or by check may be located in their system within 90 days of purchase. Receipts for purchases made with The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, The Home Depot Commercial Revolving Charge, or The Home Depot Commercial Account may be located in our system within 365 days of purchase. Original shipping charges will be fully refunded in the event that the return is the result of an error by The Home  Depot. Exceptions may apply (including Express Delivery and Major Appliance). Items must be returned with all components for a full refund. Home Depot requires a valid driver’s license or government-issued photo identification for non-receipted returns and returns generated from purchases made with Store Credits. 

Ulta 

According to its website, products need to be returned within 60 days of the original purchase that include the original receipt. It can also be verified in their system using your Ultamate Rewards member ID. If you would like to exchange a product for the same item, no payment is required-just bring it in. However, if you exchange for an item at a higher price point, you will need to pay for the difference in price and sales tax. 

Likewise, if you exchange for a different item at a lower price point, you will receive back the difference in price and sales tax. When it comes to online orders, if you choose to mail your return to Ulta Beauty, the store asks that you cover the return shipping charges. If you return a product within 60 days of the process date on the order packing slip, you will receive your refund in the form of your original payment. If payment was made with a store Gift Card, the refund will be issued in the form of an Ulta Beauty eGift Card. Ulta Beauty’s policy does not permit the resale of used, damaged or expired products. 

Kohl’s 

Kohl’s Return Policy allows for purchased items to be returned within 180 days of purchase and extends to all Kohl’s merchandise with the exception of premium electronics which must be returned within 30 days from the date of purchase with original packaging and a valid receipt or account look-up.  Premium electronics purchased from November 1 – December 25 may be returned by January 31 with original packaging and a valid receipt or account look-up.

BestBuy 

According to its website, purchases made between November 1 and December 31, 2019, have an extended return period through January 14, 2020. This excludes cell phones, cellular tablets, cellular wearables, AppleCare monthly plans, and major appliances. If the shoppers have Best Buy Elite or Elite Plus, members can have extended holiday return exchange windows. My Best Buy Elite members have the greater of January 14, 2020, or 30 days from the date the purchaser received the product, to return or exchange the product. My Best Buy Elite Plus members have the greater of January 14, 2020, or 45 days from the date the purchaser received the product, to return or exchange the product.

Dillard’s 

According to its website, items with tags attached may be returned to any Dillard’s location within 30 calendar days of purchase; and must be in its original, unused condition unless there is a manufacturer’s defect; and must be accompanied by either the original Dillard’s Receipt or the original Dillard’s Proof of Purchase Label. For online merchandise, it must be returned within 30 calendar days of purchase; and must be in its original, unused condition unless there is a manufacturer’s defect; and must be accompanied by either the original Dillard’s Receipt or the original Dillard’s Proof of Purchase Label.
