1,000 Pounds of Tar Washes up on South Padre Island

Local News

Nearly 1,000 pounds of tar wash up on South Padre Island Beaches.

It took crews 2 hours to clean up the south portion of the island, that is the area behind the Isla Grand Hotel.

At this point the city of South Padre tells us cleanup is complete.

We saw small fragments of debris still washing up on the beach.

Brandon Hill – Shoreline Director says, “It’s very common to find small pieces of tar that have washed up most of the time they’re mistaken as small pieces of wood or charcoal. To have an amount like we did today isn’t all that common, but it’s not something that we’re not prepared for.

The Texas General Land Office states this tar has not caused a negative impact on local wildlife.

The GLO and the U.S. Coast Guard will investigate the source of this tar.
