One person died Tuesday after a shooting near Falcon Lake.

Investigators went to Falcon State Park — located northwest of Roma on Falcon Lake — shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday.

One person apparently suffered a fatal gunshot wound, said Chief Deputy Ray Del Bosque of the Zapata County Sheriff’s Office. Another person was hospitalized with hypothermia after falling or jumping in the lake.

“The motive or the reason why it happened is unclear,” Del Bosque said, adding that investigators haven’t interviewed the survivor. “We have to wait until he’s cleared by the medical doctors and then, that way, we can interview him and we’ll have more information.”

Falcon Lake is a hotspot for drug trafficking.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection routinely seizes major drug shipments near the lake and recently provided intelligence to Mexico that helped officials confiscate nearly 6,300 pounds of marijuana in a single bust.

Investigators removed a Ford truck, a Chevrolet truck and two boats from the scene.
