Local hospital taking the lead on breakfast

HARLINGEN, Texas — Valley Baptist Medical Center is leading a community effort to provide a healthy breakfast. It for those struggling with hunger during the summer. The Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive is benefitting the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.

The drive began on Friday, June 7 and will wrap up on Friday, June 14. Nearly 1 in 2 children in the Valley live at or below the federal poverty level. It is common for families not have money for food during the summer school break. The hospital wants to bridge that gap.

Stephen Hill, Chief Nursing Officer, “The reason we do this is every year, this was started by a nurse up in Detroit-a pediatric nurse that notice that so many kids were hungry, and so they started it and pushed it out. We’ve done it for our third or fourth year I believe now in the Valley and it’s awesome every year we’ve increased our serving goal. This year is one ton of cereal and then $8,000 in online donations.”

Whole-grain cereal, when part of a balanced breakfast including dairy, fruit and lean protein, is a popular food item that can easily fill the hunger gap during the summer months when children are not in school. Donations can be dropped off at the Valley Baptist-Harlingen’s South Tower lobby until
Friday, June 14.
