PHARR, Texas — Unemployment numbers are down across the region. For May of 2019 Cameron and Starr counties saw their lowest unemployment numbers since 1990. Now one of the largest regional job fairs is aiming to
keep those numbers low.
Robert Mora, Workforce Solutions Business Solutions Manager, “As always we have that demand from employers that need to fill positions that they have.”
On Thursday, July 18 Workforce Solutions in collaboration with the city of Pharr, will be hosting the 5th Annual RGV Job Fair. It is one of the largest in the region.
According to the May 2019 Labor Market Report, unemployment numbers in the Rio Grande Valley are near historic lows. With Cameron County leading the way with a rate of 4.6 percent and Hidalgo County not far behind with 5 percent. Both Cameron and Starr counties notched their lowest unemployment rate since 1990 which is when the data started being archived.
Health care, construction and hospitality are the sectors in the Valley which have seen the most job gains. Many companies in those industries will be attending the job fair.
“We currently have over 70 employers that have confirmed to be in attendance we’ve targeted an array of different opportunities of occupations and different industries.” says Mora.
Workforce Solutions says there is a variety of reasons the numbers have dipped including local business growth and employees finding better paying jobs resulting in more vacancies.
Robert Mora, “The employer list is already out you can find it RGV Operations get hired and just do your research. Do a little bit of research before you come find out which companies are here. Which services it is they provide and what positions it is that they have available.”
While the numbers across the region have fallen the RGV Metro Service areas of Brownsville-Harlingen and McAllen-Edinburg-Mission still rank last in the state.
