CAMERON COUNTY, Texas (KVEO) — A Cameron County Jailer has been arrested for bringing prohibited substances and items into a correctional facility, a 3rd degree felony.
According to an affidavit, on July 28, inmate Jose Luis Garcia was found in possession of marijuana while housed at the Carizales-Rucker Detention Center.
After an investigation that involved listening to inmate jail phone calls, it was uncovered that one of the numbers Garcia called belonged to Jailer Homero Lopez II.
When Lopez arrived at work that evening, he was confronted and eventually confessed to smuggling drugs.
Lopez stated that he collected the marijuana from Garcia’s father and was paid $100 each time he brought in the contraband.
Both Lopez and Garcia were charged with bringing prohibited substances and items into a correctional facility.
Garcia’s bail was set at $7,500 while Lopez’s bail was set at $20,000.
