MISSION, Texas – Students of IDEA Mission’s Reaching Independence through Support and Education program. are rising to the occasion and are brewing with excitement.
With a snip of scissors, students of IDEA Mission said top of the morning by launching their new mobile coffee cart shop.
The students are part of the reaching independence through support and education 18 plus program.
“For some of us, it’s a little bit harder to find adaptability and some of our students particularly those inside our Rise classroom, they really don’t adapt to the environment outside of their comfort zone,” Said Anna Losoya, a special education Rise teacher.
Rise instructor Anna Losoya developed the coffee cart in hopes of teaching students’ skills to benefit them in the real world, focusing on those which will enhance employability, social, and daily living.
“These skills go from something they feel comfortable with into something that becomes a reality. We kind of need to think about these individual students as what do I need to prepare them for life after high school,” continued Losoya.
Students like Kenia Melo, an alum of the IDEA Mission Rise program who now works in the school’s cafeteria.
Losoya says IDEA schools are well known for breaking down barriers. Students like Melo are also breaking barriers for other students.
“And she is a great steppingstone. She will open the gate to many other students with disabilities,” said Losoya.
All the money raised through the coffee cart will go back to students for community-based vocational training.
Losoya adds that in just their first day, students are already showing their strengths and hopes the coffee cart will be a continued inspiration to so much more.
“I wish that they are able to feel capable and a lot of it is insecurity, they need to be set to high expectations and know that they are able to do it just like any other individual,” concludes Losoya.
Instructor Anna Losoya says she is pleased with the success of today’s coffee cart launch and adds besides life skills, the cart is bringing joy and happiness to the students.
