Firefighters adjusting during COVID-19

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Firefighters are continuing to work during the COVID-19 outbreak and are adjusting how they respond.

Brownsville Firefighters Association President Jorge Lerma said he wants to see all first responders tested, including his team.

Lerma said that it is critical because some firefighters might have the virus and not even know it.

“We are always worried about getting home and taking it back to our families. For those that have small children and the kids are already locked up in the house all day from school right now. It adds a lot of burden and stress to the job. Hopefully the testing will move us forward in the right direction to get back to normal,” said Lerma.

Lerma said it is hard to social distance at the station, but firefighters have stopped taking their uniforms home and have increased cleaning procedures.
