MISSION, Texas – A Mission native was celebrated this evening for his help in fighting Australian brushfires.
Rey Navarro, who works for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, spent over a month in the Australian State of Victoria assisting the government in combatting the fires.
He is the only Texas firefighter sent for this assignment and was honored at tonight’s basketball award ceremony for the Boys and Girls Club of Mission, where he took his first job.
“I didn’t expect this. I’m very honored and humbled with this event and I’m just proud to represent where I came from, the City of Mission, and represent my department and the agency,” said Firefighter Rey Navarro.
Navarro will also be recognized with a proclamation at Monday’s city hall meeting.
