Border Patrol seeing decrease in illegal crossings

News

MCALLEN, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector is seeing a decrease in illegal crossings for the first time in years. The RGV Sector says the sector remains busy during midnight when most migrants attempt to make their way into the United States, but say they have seen a dip in apprehensions.

Catholic Charities Director Sister Norma Pimentel says the respite center is seeing a lot of empty chairs. “There was a period of time when numbers had increased very extremely high, so we’ve gone back down in some numbers. New policies have been implemented that are having families remain in Mexico. That has also caused numbers of families being released to drop so yes we are seeing quite a number or less of people that we were two weeks ago.”

Customs and Border Protection is expected to release official numbers on August 8.
