BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Mayor Trey Mendez is back in Brownsville after testifying before Congress in Washington.
The local official and congressman Filemón Vela testified before the House Natural Resources Subcommittee for the expansion of the national parks system.
They discussed house resolution 4139 which includes amendments to expand the Palo Alto Battlefield National Park to include Fort Brown.
“Adding this piece of Fort Brown is critical to the interpretation of the Mexican American War in changes to our international boundaries. I sit before you requesting that congress transfer the property to the park’s service thereby protecting not only the history of our region but also our great nation,” said congressman Vela.
Fort Brown was a major part of the Mexican American War and is the inspiration for the city of Brownsville’s name.
