You may remember him.
He’s not your typical bus driver. In fact, he’s far from it.
His name is David Gomez, a McAllen Independent School District bus driver who went viral after he gifted $20 and handwritten cards to all of his graduating seniors.
Gomez’s day begins at 4:30 every morning, as he needs to be at the transportation department bright and early to inspect his bus before picking up close to 250 students.
CBS 4 News went back to school with Mr. Gomez as he starts his route with a new generation of students.
“It’s time for a new generation. I’m excited. Yesterday, I had 50 to 60 little kids who are starting Pre-K,” said Gomez.
And they couldn’t be happier!
“My bus driver is really cool,” said Natalia Ramirez, who is starting sixth grade.
Natalia’s neighbor, Royce Todd, also loves riding Bus 18 because of Mr. Gomez’s personality.
“Right when we get on the bus, he always says hi to us and likes to play music, which really calms me down before we have to go to school if I’m nervous,” said Todd.
Ian Arriolo has ridden Bus 18 for three years and says Mr. Gomez is as much as important to his school life as his teachers and friends.
“Sometimes he brings me food, and he’s so nice. I’ve been talking to him for three years, he picks up my sister and I,” Arriolo said.
Mr. Gomez says he wouldn’t trade his job for the world and his students are what makes the profession so rewarding.
“I love my job and I love to help the new generation kids to do good in school,” said Gomez.
Mr. Gomez was recently recognized by Congressman Vicente Gonzalez for his kindness and hard work at McAllen ISD.
