Attorney to remain in jail till November

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A Houston area attorney with ties to the Rio Grande Valley will remain behind bars at least until November 10th.

Bond was denied for attorney Jeffrey Stern after a federal jury indicted him on charges of Tax Fraud, Obstruction of Justice and Witness Tampering. He’s part of the Stern Law Group in McAllen. The charges go back more than a decade, involving what government investigators call an alleged criminal conspiracy. Prosecutors are accusing Stern of Barratry, the illegal practice of paying people to recruit clients for personal injury lawsuits.

A 187-page indictment alleges Stern tampered with witnesses and tried to obstruct the government’s investigation by hiding or destroying documents and asking potential witnesses not to cooperate.
