Attempted smuggling of child

News

MCALLEN, Texas – A Honduran man could face up to five years in federal prison for trying to cross into the U.S. with a young girl not related to him.

22-year-old Luis Fernando Ortiz-Matamoros has been charged with smuggling and making a false family claim.

This happened near Hidalgo as the man was trying to cross the Rio Grande river with the little girl.

Martinez claimed it was his daughter, presenting a fraudulent birth certificate for her.

According to the charges, he was only traveling with her in order to gain entry into the United States.
