MGN Online

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – On Tuesday, August 20, AARP Texas will present the City of Brownsville with a $20,000 check for the transformation and activation of Brownsville’s 14th Street Plaza.  The funds are part of the 2019 AARP Community Challenge program that calls for converting the area into a multi-generational safe space that fosters a feeling of community and economic development.

There will be two media opportunities for photos and interviews with Brownsville and AARP officials:

  • Noon:  E. 14th Street Plaza – Corner of E. 14th Street and E. Washington Street
  • 5 p.m.:  The City Commission mtg – 1001 E. Elizabeth Street, 2nd Floor  Brownsville

Nearly $1.6 million will be distributed to fund 159 “quick action” projects across the country. The idea is to support projects that help communities make immediate improvements that support residents of all ages.  Nearly 1,700 applications were received from non-profits and government entities for the program, now in its third year. Each of the projects, which must be completed by Nov. 4.
