4 the RGV: The Blue Onion fighting to stay in business after 20 years of service

WESLACO, Texas — The Blue Onion is a local restaurant in Weslaco. They have called the Valley their home for over 20 years.

“Last year was our best year ever.”

Owner Garry Ancelin says he will never forget the way it all started, with only ten tables in the sitting area.

Now, the location is double the size.

Ancelin says he never expected for his chairs to be upside down for so long.

“Have you ever experienced anything like this before? No, this is completely new….no one has experienced something like this…no one in our lifetime.”

Ancelin had to let go of more than half his staff when the dining area had to close.

“Right now we have our fingers crossed, We are going to see what happens, but right now we are just in survival mode.”

The restaurant has been only serving through the drive-thru and by relying on delivery services.

Ancelin says they have a scholarship in place for one students at both Weslaco high schools.

“The idea was to pick out kids that worked in the restaurant industry that maybe didn’t have scholarships or opportunities to do something else.”

The Blue Onion is located at 423 S International Blvd, Weslaco and they are eager to keep serving the community.

They have a second location on 925 W Dove Ave in McAllen.
