MCALLEN, Texas – Schneider’s German Gasthaus and Beergarden is offering Rio Grande Valley residents beer you can only get thousands of miles away.
“This is our number one seller, German lager,” said Schneider’s Owner, Mark Keller.
The restaurant is tucked away off of Ware Road, but it is unique to the entire Valley.
“We are the only German restaurant south of San Antonio,” said Keller.
According to Keller, the hidden gem is like no other place, “the atmosphere, you are transported to a different place.”
Keller said this year was supposed to be their year, after business dropped about 70 percent due to the ongoing construction on Ware road.
“There was no relief fund for us back then either,” said Keller.
This time last year, Keller had 17 employees which has now dropped down to three.
“Whatever we can do to help out, we try to get them in, they are also hurting,” said Keller.
Keller said the only good thing about this pandemic is the Governor allowing restaurants to be able to sell alcohol to go.
Keller couldn’t before because his restaurant didn’t have the license the state required.
“It been kind of cool because a lot of my customers are like I’m missing my Hofbrau, my Spaten,” said Keller.
