4 the RGV: Family-owned restaurant remains open despite pandemic forcing them to close

Weslaco,TX. – Monterrey Café, a restaurant passed down by generations is now back open, after closing their doors to the public for the very first time since 1972.

“It’s been in the family for basically two generations,” said Robert Lopez, son-in-law to the owners.

The mom and pop shop is best known for their portion sizes and low prices.

“The menu is pretty extensive, it is pretty large, and we pride ourselves with that,” said Lopez.

According to Lopez, they range from original Mexican food to their own specials.

“People come and eat the quickie, chicken fried steak with gravy, and then the fries, a lot of people put gravy on the fries,” said Lopez.

According to Lopez, the cafe is a livelihood for many residents, “we have people that come here for breakfast lunch and dinner.”

When the pandemic hit, it was their customers they had in mind.

“The staff, and the waitresses that work day to day with the people up here and also the community that comes in and out of the restaurant,” said Lopez.

For the very first time in four decades, Monterrey Café had to close their doors.

“Roughly for a month,” said Lopez.

Customers called often to know when they could return to the restaurant,

At one time in point, the family was scared to lose their business.

“You know there was a potential where we could lose the families dream,” said Lopez.

But Monterrey Café held on offering curbside to now dinning in.

When Monterrey Café finally opened its doors, they made sure to give back to the community.

They partnered up with one city commissioner to give away 200 meals to those in need.

“Paying the difference basically, so that some of the community can enjoy some of the food,” said Lopez.

Now that the family restaurant is back open, Lopez wants to let the residents of the Rio Grande Valley know they will continue to keep their customers, happy, fed and sanitized.

Monterrey Café is located on 118 Texas Blvd N, Weslaco, TX 78596.
