SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – One of the biggest beach events in South Padre Island is underway. Sandcastle Days 2019 is here and Local 23’s Karina Vargas got to talk to one of the founders who started it all.
Amazin’ Walter McDonald – Founder & Sculptor, “It was my idea. I got an idea ‘let’s do this’. Here it is 32 years later and it’s grown to probably the premiere event of the island. I’d call it.”
Thousands of people come to SPI every year just to see it all happen. Sculptors from all over the world come to participate in the masters of sand competition.
Clayton Brashear, owner of Clayton’s Beach Bar, “The actual sculptors they come from around the world, as far away as Holland. It’s an amazing thing. We have some U.S. ones, some local ones, and then some from other countries, so it’s an amazing project.”
This event showcases the many sculptures that can be created and the people are amazed by how the sandcastles come alive.
Tim Corey – visitor, “Oh I couldn’t believe it. I’m still wondering how they keep the sand together. I don’t know the mechanics of it. I’m an engineer by trade, so I’m kind of curious how they are doing it.”
Sandcastle Days is happening all weekend at Clayton’s Beach Bar. People from all over the country are here building one of a kind sandcastles. Entrance to the event is free. If you want to build your own sandcastle you can enter in the amateur contest to win prizes.
