3 of 7 Mexican nationals accused of robbing mall receive jail sentences

News

MCALLEN, Texas – Three of seven Mexican nationals accused of attempting to rob La Plaza Mall last summer learning their fate. Last July, seven masked men broke the glass cases of a jewelry store inside the mall using mini sledge hammers. The attempted to rob nearly $3 million worth of designer watches. Today one of the seven learned his fate.

22-year-old Javier Leobardo Olvera-Ramirez was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was also given a $10,000 fine after his attorney claimed he did not have any prior criminal history, and was the only suspect who fully cooperated with authorities. His sentence was a lot less than his co-conspirator 23-year-old Brayan Oliver Melchor who was sentenced to 25 years in prison and faces deportation after serving his sentence. Melchor’s sentence is higher because District Judge Israel Ramon Jr said Melchor committed an identical offense in Los Angeles. He was deported and re-entered the country illegally.

During his sentencing, he asked the judge for a second opportunity claiming he was threatened to commit the crime.

26-year-old Miguel Quintanilla-Cardenas, who confessed he only committed the crime to know what it felt like, was given a 14-year sentence.

Jorge Angel Mejia, Alberto Rafael Barrera and Javier Leobardo Olvera also part of this case have entered guilty pleas. Their sentencing is set for later this month.

27-year-old Abner Zepeda Posos was a co-conspirator of the same mall robbery in Los Angeles that Melchor was convicted for. Posos is the only suspect who has not pled guilty. His trial begins on Monday, August 26.
