RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan says it looks like the number of illegal crossings at the border will drop by 25% this month.
McAleenan credited the crackdown in Mexico and the Trump Administration initiatives for June’s plunge.
More than 144,000 migrants were encountered or arrested at the border in May, that is the highest monthly total in 13 years.
“We’ve also worked with Mexico to initiate the expansion of the migrant protection protocol that the existing locations and we are implementing plans to add additional locations across the border in the coming weeks. ” Says Kevin McAleenan, the acting Homeland Security Secretary.
A dip in border crossings is common during the hot summer months, but McAleenan downplayed the role of the seasonal trends in migration.
He says he expects to be able to tell by late July if the initiatives will have a sustained impact.
