EDINBURG, Texas – UTRGV is celebrating its 15th annual Mariachi Festival with two days of concerts, workshops and competitions. This event a part of the school’s week-long arts and literary festival called FESTIBA.
Hundreds of mariachi students from the valley, as well as a few from Oregon and Arizona are attending to hone their craft through instruction from expert musicians and vocalists.
Dahlia Guerra, UTRGV Assistant VP of Public Art, “We’ve got close to 700 students that are scattered throughout these buildings. They’re studying their instruments, they’re studying violin, trumpet, guitarron, guitar and voice.”
This year’s celebration also marks the 30th anniversary of the university’s mariachi program. The event continues into tomorrow with a concert featuring Mariachi Sol De Mexico at 7:30 p.m inside the Edinburg Performing Arts Auditorium.
