16-hour bridge closure caused estimated $20K in lost revenue

BROWNSVILLE, TX – A major delay getting the attention of local officials at the Gateway International Bridge.

The port of entry was closed off by customs and border protection after nearly 300 migrants gathered at the midpoint of the bridge for 16 Hours. Today we met with Cameron County’s top official on what impact the closure is having.

“If the belief is that if they do this there is going to be some sort of benefit for them at the end of the day,” says County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. “That’s not going to happen. It doesn’t help them in their case with regards to seeking political asylum.”

The Gateway International Bridge is part of the Cameron County International Bridge System.

According to official records the closure costs almost 20 thousand dollars in lost revenue.

On average almost 10 thousand people crossing daily, for October 10th, that number was down to 3 thousand.
