A Hidalgo County jury found the son of a former Edinburg mayor guilty of murder but a judge is allowing him to remain free on bond until his sentencing on Monday.

The jury found Carlos Ochoa guilty of murdering Alberto Treviño back on September 17, 2011.

After a week of trial, jurors made their decision on Friday.

During closing arguments on Friday, the prosecution reminded the jury about Ochoa’s ex-girlfriend’s testimony on what happened that night.

Laura De La Cruz told police she was with Ochoa when he shot Treviño in the back of the head and that the state failed to prove it was an intentional shooting.

Tensions rose between the defense and the prosecution after the defense called for a mistrial.

The prosecution also made comments regarding Ochoa’s financial status and that of his family but the judge denied that motion.

Ochoa was not found guilty of assault indictment.

The judge overseeing the case is allowing Ochoa to remain free on bond until his sentencing on Monday.

Treviño's family members said they did not agree with the decision.
