A Houston area woman is behind bars after she allegedly tried to smuggle a 4-month-old baby into the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested the woman at the Hildago-Reynosa International Bridge on Wednesday.

The woman's name was not immediately available but CBP officers reported she walked up from Mexico on the bridge's pedestrian lanes.

Investigators told Action 4 News that the 30-year-old Pasadena woman had a 4-month-old baby boy with her.

The woman claimed the child was her son and showed an American birth certificate for the boy.

CBP officers learned that the child was not her son but rather a 4-month-old Mexican national without permission to enter the United States.

The woman is now facing federal human smuggling charges.

Investigators said the baby boy was returned to his mother in Mexico.
