SAN ANTONIO, TX -- A Rio Grande Valley soccer coach is behind bars after being arrested in San Antonio for an outstanding warrant for not paying child support.
RGV Grandes FC, spent 2011 as a professional soccer team, but switched to an under-20 amateur format this season, and employed Harlingen resident Danny Mariscal as it's coach.
But after the 5th game of their 6-game season, an 8-0 loss in San Antonio that was the Grandes' worst defeat of the season, Mariscal was arrested and jailed by Bexar County deputies.
At last check, Mariscal was still in custody, arrested on a warrant issued for failure to pay child support.
Sources close to the situation says the amount of non-payment is in excess of $20,000 dollars.
Mariscal, held on five thosuand dollars bond, may not be arraigned for 30 to 60 days, according to Bexar County.
But Grandes General manager George Castaneda tells Action 4 Sports that he believes the entire arrest is a misunderstanding that will be cleared up soon.
He expects Mariscal to be coaching Saturday night in Brownsville for RGV Grandes FC's final game of the season.
