EDINBURG, TX -- Behind career-nights by Jesus Delgado and Lauri Toivonen, the University of Texas-Pan American men’s basketball team beat the Lamar University Cardinals, who won the 2012 Southland Conference Tournament to reach the NCAA Tournament, 75-70 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Delgado led all scorers with a career-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Toivonen scored a career-high 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Aaron Urbanus also reached double-figures, scoring 13 points with five assists.

Three Cardinals (1-10) reached double-figures in scoring, led by Donley Minor and Amos Wilson, who scored 15 points each. Stan Brown scored 11 points with seven rebounds.

Up early, the Broncs (4-7) found themselves down 16-10 after an 8-0 run by the Cardinals. Delgado responded with back-to-back baskets to bring the Broncs back within two.

The Cardinals built their largest lead of the game at 23-16 after a Nikko Acosta free throw with 6:22 remaining in the first half.

Down 31-27, the Broncs scored the first five points of the second half to take the lead back at 32-31. The game stayed tight for a few minutes, but the Broncs slowly started building up their lead. The Broncs took their largest lead of the game at 64-53 on an Urbanus layup with 5:49 remaining.

The Cardinals used a full-court press to try to get back into it in the final minutes, but with 1:40 to go, Delgado snuck behind the defense and turned a home run inbound pass into a right-handed slam to make it 72-62.
