EDINBURG, TX --  The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders 3-1 on Tuesday in front of a near-capacity crowd of 1,218 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The opening set was a back and forth affair at first. The Broncs (1-3) led 13-12 on a kill by Krysta Freitas off a set by Nycole Masaki. The Islanders (3-1), however, responded with an 8-0 run that included two services aces and a kill by Shannon Hullum to take a lead they did not relinquish. The Islanders took the first set 25-20.

The Broncs trailed 5-3 early in the second, but an attack error by Brooke Alverson and a kill by Ijanae Holman allowed the Broncs to tie the set. The Islanders scored the next three points, but the Broncs stayed close, pulling within 9-7 on a block by Sarah Davis and Freitas. The Islanders scored 12 of the next 17 points to pull away for the 25-18 win.

The Broncs trailed 13-10 in the third set, but scored four-straight, including kills by Michelle McNamee and Ijanae Holman, to take a 14-13 lead. After the Islanders tied it up, Holman recorded back-to-back kills to give the Broncs the lead for good as they won 25-21.

Holman led the Broncs with 13 kills to go with 12 digs for the double-double. McNamee was second on the team with a career-high tying 12 kills, nine digs and two blocks.

The Islanders built an 18-9 lead in the fourth set before going on to win 25-19.

The Islanders had four players reach double-figures in kills, including Hullum (17), Ivy Baresh (14), Alverson (14) and Brianna Brink (11). Baresh added 13 digs for the double-double. Logen Bourque had a match-high 52 assists while Micah Nolan had a match-high 33 digs.

The Broncs open up the Texas Tech Invitational on Friday at 1:00 p.m. against Texas Tech before facing Northwestern State at 4:00.
