MCALLEN, TX -- After being suspended from the Naval Academy, former McAllen basketball standout JJ Avila left Annapolis hoping to transfer to the University of Richmond for the remainder of his college eligibility. But according to an interview Avila gave the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the 6-7 forward will have to spend a year back home at South Texas College before joining the Spiders.

"Some of my classes didn't transfer from the Naval Academy, so my (grade point average) wasn't high enough to transfer immediately," Avila said on Tuesday. "I need to take these four classes each semester, and keep above a 2.0 (GPA), hopefully higher, so I can go over to Richmond the following year and have enough stability in my GPA."

Avila also told the newspaper that he will keep in shape while attending STC by working out with a former coach.
