EDINBURG, TX -- The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team opened the 10th annual Al Ogletree Classic with a 1-0 victory over the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Broncs (2-0) starting pitcher Bryan Maxwell was dominant, pitching six hitless innings to start his outing, striking out seven along the way. The Thunderbirds (0-4) had five base runners on two walks, a hit batsman, an error and a fielder’s choice. The no-hit bid ended in the seventh when Mitchell Kauweloa led off with a single, but Maxwell induced a double play to erase the runner. Justin Neuhart followed with a single, but Zach Zouzalik (1-0) came in and retired Tyson Weber to end the inning.

Thunderbirds starter Kelsey Outram (0-2) matched Maxwell pitch for pitch for much of the game, allowing three singles, but facing the minimum over the first five and two-thirds innings thanks to two double plays and one caught stealing.

The Broncs broke through in the bottom of the seventh. Roger Bernal led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Torres. A wild pitch allowed Bernal to advance to third, from where he scored on an infield-single by Angel Ibanez.

Outram ended up pitching a complete game, striking out six while allowing six hits and one walk over eight innings.

Jonathan Sa pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.
