Bulldogs Coach Tony Harris The Other Finalist
MCALLEN, TX -- The McAllen Independent School District finally has a permanent Athletic director to replace the retired Poppy Rodriguez, and she is a familiar name to Valley sports fans.
El Paso Socorro AD Paula Gonzalez returns to the RGV to take the same position in McAllen, the former Brownsville Pace volleyball coach is a 2005 inductee into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame.
A Harlingen HS alum, Gonzalez became coach of the Viqueens at the age of 24, and for the next 28 years, led Pace to 17 playoff appearances and a .700 record.
While Paula Gonzalez was the recommendation of McAllen Superintendent Dr. James A. Ponce, and a unanimous decision by the McAllen ISD school board, two sources close to the situation say that she was not the name picked by the search committee.
The recommendation sent to Ponce by the search committee was said to be McAllen HS head football coach Tony Harris.
