LOS FRESNOS, TX -- Texas A&M-Kingsville head women’s basketball coach Scott Hyland signed Los Fresnos’ Ashley Benavides during the early signing period, and she will be playing for the Javelinas next year.
“We really liked what we saw from Ashley during her junior season and had a chance to work with her at our camps this summer,” said Hyland. “That is when we knew she was exactly the type of person we were looking for in our program.”
Benavides is a 6-2 post player who averaged 11.2 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game while leading Los Fresnos to a 26-9 record last year. She also shot 51 percent from the field. “Ashley has tremendous potential. Her combination of size, athletic ability, skill, and hard work are things I believe give her a chance to have a great impact in our program,” said Hyland.
