RGV 40, Corpus Christi 33
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS -- The Rio Grande Valley Dorados started their 2009 season off with a bang, beating the Corpus Christi Sharks 40-33 Saturday with an aerial assault.
Rookie starting quarterback Nick Hill led the way for the Dorados (1-0), throwing for 328 yards, six touchdowns and an intercetion on 24-for-39 passing.
Rod Windsor was Hill’s primary target in the win, finishing the game with 12 catches for 101 yards and 4 touchdowns. Fellow-receiver Bret Smith caught two touchdowns and totaled nine catches for 146 yards.
The Dorados also benefited from some strong defense at the end of the game. Defensive back Riley Swanson intercepted a pass from Sharks quarterback Gary Cooper with under a minute remaining to halt Corpus Christi’s potential game-tying drive.
RGV defenders Travis McAlpine and Dahnel Singfield also registered interceptions off of Cooper, who had a lackluster 2009 debut for Corpus Christi (0-1). Along with the three picks, Cooper completed just 19 of 14 pass attempts for 250 yards.
The Dorados will next face the Arkansas Twisters (1-0) on April 11 at Arkansas.
