Vipers Beat Jam For First Win Of New Season

HIDALGO, TX -- Jeff Adrien led the Rio Grande Valley Vipers with a double-double 29 points, 13 rebounds in a 113-102 win over the Bakersfield Jam tonight at State Farm Arena.

The Vipers saw seven players score double figures. In addition to Adrien’s double-double, Houston Rockets assignment Donatas Motiejunas also scored a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds. Mike Singletary added 17 points, followed by Scott Machado with 12 points. Damian Saunders, Chris Johnson and Toure’ Murry each added 10 points.

Jerel McNeal led Bakersfield with 18 points, followed by a double-double 16 points, 13 rebounds from Brian Butch. James Nunnally added 16 points. Damian James tallied 12 points, and Renaldo Major rounded out the Jam’s leaders with 10 points.

Bakersfield held on to a single-digit lead throughout the first quarter. With 7:45 remaining in the half, Singletary sank a shot from the line to tie the game at 38 points. He followed up with a jump shot, and additional baskets from Adrien, Murry and Motiejunas gave the Vipers their largest lead of the half 48-40. The Jam quickly responded. A shot from behind the arc by Nunnally put Bakersfield back on top 53-51. The teams tied twice more before the Jam took a 58-55 lead at the half.

A layup from Machado put RGV back in control of the game 60-58 at the beginning of the third quarter. Midway through the third quarter, Saunders connected with a slam dunk to put the Vipers back in control 79-68. With :26.1 remaining in the third, a layup from McNeal helped the Jam inch within three points, 89-86, but the Vipers were able to hold the lead throughout the end of the quarter.

Bakersfield fought back throughout the fourth quarter. A three-pointer from Butch tied the game at 93 points. Nunnally gave the Jam at 95-93 advantage. Machado followed up with a layup that put the Vipers back in the 96-95 lead. However, RGV maintained the momentum claimed a 113-102 win.
