Since before the prohibition, Texas liquor stores have been forced to close for the Christian Sabbath, Sunday.

But Houston area Texas representative Senfronia Thompson has introduced a bill to the Texas House saying it's time for the law to change.

Local liquor store owners like David Hernandez of Holiday Wine and Liquor agrees.

"There’s not a real strong reason as to why the store should be closed so it's a choice every business can make on their own, and we would like to be open on Sundays,” Hernandez said.  “Everyone else who has a permit to sell alcohol is open on Sunday, and sells on Sunday, except liquor stores. But everybody else can sell on Sunday."

Not only would it level the business playing field, Hernandez says it would bring added revenue to the state.

"We currently lose a lot of sales to Mexico because Mexico doesn't close on Sundays,” Hernandez said.

While a bill of this kind has been introduced before, this time Hernandez is more optimistic it will pass.

"This year we have more people on board, some of the distributors are now on board to get the law changed so I think it's got a better chance of changing this year,” Hernandez said.

If the proposed law does pass it would still require liquor stores to remain closed on holidays.
