Strong winds and the threat of severe weather have prompted authorities to shut down all Cameron County's public beaches.

Cameron County officials made the decision just after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The Rio Grande Valley is bracing for thunderstorms and severe weather overnight.

Strong winds are already wreaked havoc across the Valley but have raised tides in the Gulf of Mexico.

Those tides swept one surfer on South Padre Island out near the entrance of the jetties.

A U.S. Coast Guard crew rescued the surfer and brought him back to dry land.

Cameron County officials shut down Boca Chica Beach on the mainland as well as Isla Blanca Park, Beach Access 5 and Beach Access 6 on South Padre Island.

Authorities reported RV's and other high-profile vehicles will not be allowed to drive on the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway if winds exceed 50 mph.

City of South Padre Island officials said beaches will remain open within city limits but beachgoers are asked to heed weather conditions and flag warnings.

South Padre Island officials said they will keep police and firefighters fully-staffed with public works employees on stand by.

Action 4 News has partnered up with South Padre Live to provide LIVE web cams of weather conditions on South Padre Island and Port Isabel.
