Everyone wants prosperity and the Rio Grande Valley is no different.
The Legislative Tour 2013 made its rounds in Cameron and Willacy County.
It's an opportunity to show Texas legislators, why federal money is important in helping the Valley grow.
“People tend to look at the border as a local or regional issue but indeed the national trade is a federal responsibility and we need to do more" United States Senator John Cornyn said
Congressman Filemon Vela said while these issues are important, he wants to work with Senator Cornyn on bringing jobs to South Texas.
He said our unemployment rate is holding strong at 11 percent and that needs to change.
Everyone is working on different issues and there are different topics being brought up, that could bring job growth to South Texas projects like the university merger between UT Pan American, UT Brownsville and Space X.
"Yesterday we heard representatives from the Port of Brownsville about the prospects about bringing an LNG Export facility to South Texas, so there are a lot of good things happening," Congressman District 34 Filemon Vela said
Job growth and federal funding might've been key players in this visit.
Senator Cornyn announced the re-introduction of a bill to encourage the public and private partnerships for the U.S. Port of entry.
States like Texas, California and Arizona all know the importance of this project.
Cornyn said our ports of entry bring in 6 million jobs in the United States that have to do with the interchange in commercial.
"The public private partnerships are going to enable our bridge system to continue receiving money for expansions or infrastructure improvements it’s also going to give the ability for the private sector to invest with the public sector which means tax dollars with the private sector." Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos said
Federal money is getting shorter and tighter its prompting our representatives to find innovative ways to fund projects.
