A federal investigation into misdeeds at a narcotics task force housed at the Mission Police Department has ended with at least two officers being arrested.
The McAllen Monitor reported that officers Jonathan Treviño and Alexis Espinoza were both taken into federal custody on Wednesday evening.
Treviño is the son of Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño while Espinoza is the son of Hidalgo Police Chief Rudy Espinoza.
Federal investigators are remaining tight-lipped while several recent federal court cases filed in McAllen remain sealed.
Police Chief Speaks
Mission Police Chief Martin Garza said a search warrant was not executed at the police department but he confirmed meeting with FBI officials on Wednesday morning.
Chief Garza said his agency is conducting their own administrative investigation of the incident but has also opened up their department to federal agents.
Garza said the two officers taken into FBI custody were assigned to a narcotics task force and did not have regular patrol duties.
At a late Wednesday night press conference, Garza asked the public to maintain its confidence in the Mission Police Department.
"The behavior of these officers should not reflect on the good work other officers do," Garza said.
Cases Under Review
Sources told Action 4 News that the officers involved in the investigation belong to the "Panama Unit" of a local drug task force.
According to Hidalgo County Commissioners Court records, the "Panama Unit" was designed to fight street-level dealers in and around the City of Mission and Hidaglo County.
Chief Garza declined to confirm the identities of the officers arrested but said they are going to be suspended with pay.
Garza said administrators are reviewing the cases belonging to the two officers.
"We will not tolerate this type of behavior," Garza said.
