Canton Charges To Win Over Vipers

HIDALGO, TX -- Marcus Morris led the Vipers with 18 points in tonight’s 136-113 loss to the Canton Charge at the State Farm Arena. The Charge were led by Manny Harris, who recorded a season high 46 points.

The Charge put the first four points of the game on the board with a 3-point shot from Kyle Gibson and a free throw from Dante Milligan. The Vipers’ Greg Smith answered with a layup, followed by a 3-pointer from Kelvin Lewis to take the 5-4 lead. The score remained close throughout the first quarter as both teams fought for control. The score tied three times in the quarter, with the last tie at 26 points on a layup from Smith. Canton’s Antoine Agudio responded with a jump shot that gave the Charge the 26-28 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Morris tied the game at 28 points to start the second quarter. Smith followed up with a layup to give the Vipers the 30-28 advantage. However, the Charge quickly took back the game and held a 39-32 lead over the Vipers with 8:32 remaining in the first half. Tyren Johnson helped the Vipers close their deficit to one point, 49-48 at the 3:44 mark. Canton broke away for the 57-51 lead on a jump shot from Gibson. Morris came back with a layup, followed by a shot from behind the arc by Willie Warren to head into the half down by one point, 57-56.

The Vipers tied the game again to start the third quarter on a shot from the line by Smith and a layup by Morris. Morris followed up with a 3-pointer and free throw. Then, Lee Humphrey added another shot from downtown, and Morris put up an alley oop that was assisted by Will Conroy to give the Vipers the 68-61 lead. The Vipers did not hold on to the lead for long. Aguido notched a 23’ jump shot that sent the Charge on an offensive run. Canton held the 96-79 advantage at the end of the quarter.

Canton continued to dominate the fourth quarter. Harris gave the Charge their largest lead of the game 111-88 on a 3-point shot with 8:31 remaining in the game. Damian Saunders cut the Vipers’ deficit to 115-102 with an alley oop. Agudio nailed another 3-pointer and Humphrey responded with a shot from behind the arc for the Vipers. Then, Harris sank two free throws for Canton. Conroy answered for the Vipers with a layup to bring the score to 120-107 with 4:53 remaining in the game. The Vipers could not find the momentum to overpower the Charge. Canton claimed the game 136-133.

In addition to Morris’ 18 points for the Vipers, Smith recorded 15 points, followed by Conroy’s 14 points, 18 assists. Johnson, Brown and Warren each tallied 10 points.

Canton saw five players record double digits. In addition to Harris’ 46 points, Aguido scored 31 points, followed by Gibson’s 30 points. Milligan tallied a double-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and TJ Campbell notched 10 points.
