MCALLEN, TX -- A former Division-IA college football player and offensive coordinator for a highly successful program in the Dallas-Fort Worth area has been named to take charge at McAllen High School.

Kevin Brewer of Garland Rowlett High in Garland ISD was approved by the McAllen School Board at its meeting Monday, Jan. 28. A former offensive lineman for Texas Christian University, Brewer is poised to become Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator at McAllen High.

During his 10-year association with the Rowlett Eagles (District 10-5A), they have qualified for the state playoffs eight straight years, won two District titles, four Bi-District banners and an Area championship during that span. Just as impressive, at least 46 students at the high school have earned athletic scholarships in the past six years. Two former players are now candidates for the upcoming NFL draft.

“His strengths are his integrity, leadership skills, rapport with students, staff and parents,” McAllen ISD Athletic Director Paula Gonzalez said. “He’s known as a motivator. He emphasizes success for the student athlete. He has a structured, disciplined philosophy with an emphasis on all athletic teams.”

Brewer played at TCU from 1991-95 and played on a Southwest Conference champion under Coach Pat Sullivan in 1994 (the school’s first SWC title since 1959). A multi-sport athlete in high school (football, basketball, track), Brewer, 40, has previously coached track, basketball and football. For Rowlett, he is the co-offensive coordinator, varsity offensive line coach, strength/off-season coordinator and head powerlifting coach.

“I hope to take all that knowledge and experience and bring it to McHi,” Brewer said.

Regarding his coaching philosophy, Brewer added “I believe in playing fast, playing physical and not beating yourself. (On offense) We’re going to put our playmakers in the best position we can to be successful. (On defense) I believe in being physical, flying to the football and getting turnovers.”

The McAllen position will be Brewer's first as a head coach, before his stint at Rowlett he was also an assistant at Garland Lakeview Centennial and Dallas Bryan Adams high schools.
