Islanders 6, Broncs 5

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX -- The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored twice in the ninth and put the tying run in scoring position, but ultimately fell to the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders 6-5 on Tuesday at Chapman Field.

Trailing 6-3 with one out in the ninth, Riley Goulding tripled and Shane Klemcke hit an RBI-double. Klemcke then moved to third on a wild pitch while Derek Hagy drew a four-pitch walk. Roger Bernal followed with an RBI-single to make it a one-run game. Islanders (19-26) closer Phillip Garcia got Mission-native Angel Ibanez to pop-out and Vincent Mejia to ground into a fielder’s choice to record his seventh save.

Goulding was one of five Broncs (23-14) with multiple hits, leading the way with a career-high three hits. Klemcke, Bernal, Mike McCarthy and Adrian de la Rosa each had two hits.

The Islanders got on the board against Jonathan Delgado (0-1) in the third. Kyle Danford reached on an error and then moved to third on a single by Jordan Lee and an error in right field. Drew Vest grounded into an RBI-fielder’s choice, and after a wild pitch, Jonathan Gonzales hit an RBI-single to knock out Delgado with the score 2-0.

In the fifth, the Islanders put runners at first and third with one out, setting up an Eric Weiss groundout and a Brad Porras RBI-triple that made it 4-0.

Islanders pitchers Tim Keller (1-5) and Trevor Belicek held the Broncs scoreless through the first five innings. In the sixth, however, Klemcke hit a leadoff triple and Bernal hit a one-out single to make it 4-1.

The Islanders got that run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by Vest, but the Broncs offense kept coming in the seventh. With one out, McCarthy singled and de la Rosa doubled. Goulding hit an RBI-single and Klemcke grounded into an RBI-fielder’s choice to make it 5-3.

The Islanders got one of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh when Weiss reached on a bunt single, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
