BROWNSVILLE, TX -- Leah Russell launched a 30-foot shot into the left side of the net for the only goal in UTB/TSC's 1-0 win over Northwood University in Red River Athletic Conference women's soccer Saturday afternoon at Scorpion Field.

The goal, coming in the 56th minute of the game in the second half, insured the Scorpions will be either a No. 1 or No. 2 seed for the RRAC Tournament.

The win was the 11th straight for the Scorpions, who are now 13-2-1 for the year. UTB/TSC is 8-0 in the RRAC, and shares the lead with Our Lady of the Lake University. The two teams meet Saturday, Oct. 28 in San Antonio.

Saturday's win was a physical one dominated by the defensive teams on both sides. UTB/TSC managed only 12 shots, six on goal, while Northwood had four shots, one on goal.

After a scoreless first half, most people expected any goal to be big in the game. Russell made her 30-yard shot count, hitting the left side of the net just inside the post.

Jessica Hamer played all 90 minutes as goalkeeper for the Scorpions and had one save.

The new format for the RRAC Tournament provides a week of rest for the top two seeded teams. Since both UTB/TSC and OLLU have clinched the top two spots, both will not have to play on Nov. 5 when the four teams seeded three to six will play.

UTB/TSC will play in the conference tournament semifinals Nov. 11 in Fort Worth.
