Edinburg North Alum 1-Under At Badger Invitational
SMU junior Felicia Espericueta earned her second-consecutive tournament victory Monday, shooting 1-under par at the Badger Invitational at University Ridge golf course.
MADISON, WI -- As a team, SMU finished in second place shooting 304-300-314--918, 18 strokes behind host Wisconsin, while Illinois State finished in third, 11 strokes behind the Mustangs.
"Our ladies fought hard all day battling the course and the poor conditions," said assistant coach David Von Ins. "We were right there until the end, but gave a couple strokes back on the closing holes.
"I am so proud of my ladies for how hard they battled all week. They showed some real mental toughness out there."
Espericueta carded a 70-72-73--215, 1-under for the tournament, the only golfer at the invitational to post a score under par. After winning the Chip-N Club Invitational two weeks ago, Espericueta is now two-for-two in tournaments this fall.
"Felicia seemed to not even notice the windy and rainy conditions; she played great all tournament," Von Ins said. "I am extremely proud of her and the hard work that she has put in on the greens, it has really paid off. She capped it off with a 40-foot birdie on the last hole."
Wisconsin's Jessie Gerry finished second and was six strokes behind the SMU junior.
Maria Elena Villamil also posted her second-consecutive Top 10 finish for the Mustangs, tying for eighth place with a score of 16-over (232). Jennifer Hooper finished tied for 23rd (+22) and Claire Kinsey tied for 26th (+23).
SMU will begin play at the Johnie Imes Invitational on Oct. 3 in Colombia, Mo.
