LINCOLN, NE & MONTGOMERY, AL -- What are the odds that two different golfers from the Rio Grande Valley would each win their very first college golf tournaments on the same day, almost exactly one thousand miles apart?
Astronomical is the answer, and yet it happened on September 13th, 2011.
On that day, Edinburg North graduate Felicia Espericueta, a sophomore at SMU wins the tournament held in Lincoln by the University of Nebraska with a combined score of 74-75-71-220, also leading her Mustangs to the team victory as well.
Meanwhile, 1,033 miles away in Montgomery at a tournament held by Alabama State, Weslaco alum and Texas Southern freshman Kassandra Rivera wins HER first ever college golf tournament with a two-day score of 76-78-154.
Congratulations to both of our Valley golfers!
