Edinburg 5-Laredo 0, Roadrunners Win Series 2-1
EDINBURG, TX -- The Edinburg Roadrunners pitching staff combined for a four-hit shutout of the Laredo Broncos defeating them 5-0 Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium to take the best-of-three series 2-1.
With the win, Edinburg will face the Amarillo Dillas in best-of-five series for the United League Baseball championship.
Starter Eric Montoya, Mark DiBernardo (1-0), Ray Silva, and Julio Castro kept the Broncos (1-2) off of the scoreboard.
The Roadrunners (2-1) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first against Santo Hernandez (0-1). Felix Molina hit a one out single to center field and then Nelson Teilon followed with a walk. One out later, Ambiorix Concepcion hit a three-run home run making it 3-0 Roadrunners.
Alexis Hernandez started the bottom of the second with a single and then came into score on an RBI double by Osiel Flores extending Edinburg’s lead 4-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Flores reached on a throwing error by Broncos third baseman Jonathan Cisneros. With two outs, Pino hit an RBI double to left center field allowing Flores to score making it 5-0 Roadrunners.
Julio Castro got the final two outs of the ball game to pick up his first save of the postseason to give Edinburg the 5-0 victory.
DiBernardo got the win after pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth and did not allow a run in an inning and two-thirds.
The Roadrunners will open the United League Championship series at Edinburg Baseball Stadium Friday night against the Amarillo Dillas. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with Tim Haines expected to pitch for the Roadrunners.
The championship series is the best-of-five games with the first two games at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
