HARLINGEN, TX -- Amarilo Dillas starting pitcher Ryan Mitchell (1-0) allowed just an infield-single in a 5-0 complete game shutout of the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in game one of the United League Baseball Semifinals on Tuesday at Harlingen Field.
The Dillas lead the best-of-three series 1-0.
Arlon Quiroz had the lone hit for the WhiteWings. It came with two outs in the bottom of the second. The WhiteWings had five other base runners – on four walks and one error. Mitchell retired the final 13 of the final 14 batters he faced.
After Steve Raburn (0-1) retired the Dillas in order in the top of the first, they scratched out a run before an out was recorded in the top of the second. Julio Martinez singled. Stephen Doulgas hit a grounder to first, but the throw to second was not in time for the force. Alberto Cruz followed with an RBI-single to make it 1-0.
The Dillas loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third to set-up a Douglas sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Rob Recuenco led off the top of the fourth with a triple. One out later, Jermel Lomack hit an RBI-single. Adam de la Garza followed with a single to set-up an RBI-single by Joaquin Rodriguez to make it 4-0.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Martinez singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Cruz to knock out Raburn with the score 5-0.
The WhiteWings and Dillas play game two on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa. Right-hander David Cross (7-5, 4.14) is expected to face left-hander Ronald Lowe (7-4, 4.34). The WhiteWings must win the game to force a decisive game three on Thursday.
