BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS -- Porter High School student-athlete Mario Perez has signed a Red River Athletic Conference Letter of Intent to play soccer with the UTB/TSC Scorpion Men's Soccer Team for the 2009-10 academic year.
"I feel we have signed one of the hottest properties in the country," Scorpion head coach Dan Balaguero said. "Virtually every major college soccer program has had Mario on their radar for the last two years. He is a player who has the ability to change the game in an instant. He is a tremendous passer of the ball and has phenomenal pace and intelligence."
Perez started for Porter all four years and is a two-time All-State selection. He was a member of the 2006 Cowboy team that won the Class 5A state championship.
"I have known Mario for a while," Balaguero said. "His training habits are fantastic, he is a player that has the drive and passion to go on and be a pro. As far as I'm concerned he is the best attacking high school player in Texas."
Perez has also played and been captain of the Houston Dynamo South Academy for the last two years. In 2007, he traveled with the U.S. Region III Team to Argentina.
Perez is the younger brother of Scorpion midfielder Rogelio Perez. The two will be on the same team for a second time, since both played at Porter High School.
