Broncs Volleyball Falls In Final Home Game Of Season

EDINBURG, TX --  In the final home match of her career, senior Juri Franzen tied the the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball program record for 20+ digs matches with 15 in a 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders on Monday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 601.

The Broncs (9-17, 2-4 Great West Conference) finish the season with a program record attendance of 5,109 in eight matches for a program record average of 639 fans per game.


Frazen tied Jacklyn Muszynski (2000-03) by coming up with 31 digs. Franzen has at least three matches remaining to try to break the record.


Offensively, Michelle McNamee led the Broncs with 16 kills while Diara Reynolds had a double-double of 13 kills and 11 digs. Nycole Masaki recorded a match-high 51 kills.


The Highlanders (11-14, 3-4 GWC) were led by Camilla Tinari, who recorded a match-high 18 kills. Danica Vukotic posted a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs while Janet Snell recorded 12 kills.


The Broncs led 7-6 early in the first set, and then used kills by McNamee and Maria Kliefoth to fuel a 3-0 run that saw them push the lead to four. The lead got as big as seven at 19-12 on a kill by McNamee before the Broncs held on to win 25-22.


The Broncs jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the second set, but the Highlanders responded with a 13-1 run to go up 17-12 before winning 25-20.


Down 23-19 in the third set, the Broncs made a comeback attempt, getting to within 24-23 before a kill by Snell won the set for the Highlanders 25-23.


Tied at 10-10 in the fourth set, the Broncs used a 9-2 run, capped by a Reynolds service ace, to pull away before winning 25-23.


The Broncs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set, but the Highlanders came back to take their first lead at 11-10 on a kill by Tinari, and they never trailed again while winning 15-12.


The Broncs are back in action on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when they visit Chicago State.
