Old man winter is keeping the Valley pretty chilly this time of the year.

But pretty soon, we’ll be welcoming spring and the peak of severe weather season.

Meteorologists use a slew of tools to track these storms, but did you know that you can help?

The SKYWARN network is a base of people throughout the country that are certified in spotting dangerous characteristics of storms and reporting it to the National Weather Service.

From hail and flooding, and strong winds and even tornadoes, the NWS trains spotters what to look for when severe weather rolls in.

Starting at the end of January, the NWS Brownsville office will host a series of conferences to get Valley residents trained.
